Musk Hints Tesla Cybercab Expansion Toward Europe Soon

Elon Musk signalled Tesla's ambitions to expand Cybercab operations beyond the United States, with Europe emerging as the next target market. On 8 September 2026, Musk responded to a German passenger who had just completed a ride in Austin, expressing hope that the vehicle would not take years to reach Germany. Musk's reply was direct: "Hopefully soon in Europe too."

The statement arrives shortly after Tesla opened public Cybercab ride-hailing service in Austin using purpose-built vehicles featuring no steering wheel or pedals. The two-seat vehicle relies entirely on Tesla's Full Self-Driving software, and early passengers have described the rides as quiet, smooth, and more stylish than competing robotaxi services. Currently, Austin remains the only city where the public can hail Cybercabs through Tesla's Robotaxi app.

European expansion presents substantial regulatory hurdles. The European Union prohibits manufacturers from self-certifying vehicles as Tesla did in the United States. Type-approval rules and a small-series limit of 1,500 automated vehicles per type annually apply across the bloc. Although supervised Full Self-Driving has achieved provisional approval in several member states through Dutch certification recognition, unsupervised robotaxi operation remains a separate and more distant objective.

Tesla has not disclosed a European launch city, specific timeline, or regulatory pathway for Cybercab. Musk previously cautioned that the company does not control European regulators, noting that supervised FSD approval alone required substantial time. The latest statement therefore reflects intent rather than a confirmed schedule. Any European deployment would require navigating complex approval processes across multiple jurisdictions before commercial service could begin.
