Volvo Discontinues EX40 in US Market, Plans Lower-Cost EX50 for 2027
Volvo will discontinue the EX40 electric SUV in the US market after the 2027 model year, making the EX60 at approximately $60,000 its most affordable EV option. The Swedish automaker plans to launch a new entry-level EX50 crossover by late 2027, priced under $50,000 to address the affordability gap in its North American lineup.
Volvo announced it will discontinue the EX40 from its US and Canadian markets following the 2027 model year, though the vehicle will remain available in Europe. The current EX40, originally reintroduced as a renamed version of the XC40 Recharge in 2019, carries a starting price of $56,545 and delivers a range up to 296 miles.
This decision will make the more expensive EX60 Volvo's baseline electric offering in the United States. The 2027 EX60 P6 Plus model starts at $59,795 and provides up to 307 miles of range, leveraging an 800-volt electrical architecture capable of adding 165 miles during a 10-minute charging session. The vehicle measures 189.1 inches in length and features integrated NACS charging capability compatible with over 29,000 Tesla Superchargers.
Volvo plans to introduce a new EX50 model priced under $50,000 before year-end 2027 as a direct replacement opportunity. The forthcoming crossover will utilize the same SPA3 platform underpinning the EX60, delivering improved driving range, faster charging speeds, and expanded interior dimensions. The European Union Intellectual Property Office approved the EX50 trademark filing on July 14, 2026.
